Domestic Abuse Fractures Lives

IDVA and Community Services

What we do

Choices on behalf of the Kent Domestic Abuse Consortium (KDAC) employ Independent Domestic Violence Advisors (IDVA) who can offer advice and support to victims of domestic abuse – male or female - who are at high risk of serious harm. The IDVA can help increase their level of safety, help them think through their options and get the necessary help they may need from other agencies. Our aim is to help victims and their children move safely towards living violence free lives.

An IDVA is your advocate and can:

  • Carry out a risk assessment of your situation

  • Prioritise your safety

  • Give you a voice

  • Listen to you and your wishes

What does an IDVA do?

An IDVA can –

  • Give advice and support to help you think through your options

  • Help you develop your own safety plan

  • Signpost you to other specialist services such as counselling, housing, legal and refuge services, in order to increase your safety and well being

  • Give advice on criminal and civil remedies available to you

  • Keep you up to date with court proceedings

  • Attend court with you

  • Explain some of the legal jargon and processes

  • Work with other agencies to help increase your safety

  • Inform you of your options if a case does not proceed to court

  • Ensure agencies work together to help to keep you safe

  • Support you to make your own decisions that are right for you

Community Support

In addition to the IDVA service, Choices can also provide support for those in the community who would like some general information regarding their options, or just someone who will listen to them in a non judgemental way. This can be provided by calling our Helpline 0800 917 9948.

Alternatively why not attend one of the One Stop Shops in Dartford, Gravesham, Maidstone, Medway, Sevenoaks, and Tonbridge.
